Ongoing Ministries
Mission Support
We extend our ministry outside the walls of St. Peder’s by supporting local, regional, and global organizations that help those in need: St. Peder’s Tabitta Kassen endowment fund is designated to provide financial support outside St. Peders’ walls. The Social Ministry Committee allocates gains realized from Tabitta Kassen to provide grants up to three consecutive years to organizations whose missions extend our ministry most effectively. In recent years, we have funded organizations such as Lutheran Health Care Bangladesh, ELCA Anti-Malaria Campaign, The Center for Victims of Torture, Feed My Starving Children, Dorothy Day Center, Community Emergency Service, and Longfellow United for Youth and Families, as well supporting relief efforts after natural or other disasters by giving to ELCA Disaster Response.
How can you help feed hungry people? Once a month, have a simple meal of rice – and donate the money you save to an organization of your choosing that works to provide food for people in your neighborhood or across the globe. (Such as World Hunger Appeal or Bread for the World or Feed My Starving Children.) One woman’s idea became a project for our congregation – and now people in other parts of the world are doing it, too!
As a complement to its commitment to social justice and global outreach, St. Peder’s supports Fair Trade by serving Peace Coffee during social hour, offering fair trade coffee and other food items for sale year-round, and holding an annual Fair Trade sale.
