Volunteer Opportunities
Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels provides a hearty, hot, dietary appropriate noon meal five days a week to homebound residents in our community. The program also serves as a daily check on clients to be sure they are all right. St. Peder’s works in partnership with 26 other southside churches to help deliver thousands of meals each year. Our volunteers deliver meals Monday-Friday, 6 times a year.
Caring Companions
There are members of St. Peder’s who are unable to regularly come to church due to health or other concerns Cards, calls or visits are intended to help all those who call St. Peder’s their church home feel connected to the life of this congregation.
Safe House Suppers
Every Monday, 52 times a year, St. Peder’s members make and deliver dinner for 8 to the Lutheran Social Services Safe House. The Safe House is a 30-day emergency shelter for homeless youth ages 16-20. At the Safe House, youth living on the streets are able to find a friendly, safe environment where they can begin the road to healthy, productive lives.
Sheridan Story
Over 200,000 children in Minnesota don’t always have access to the nutrition they need to learn and grow. This is a horrible reality for so many kids in our community. The Sheridan Story focuses on the weekend food gap, when children aren’t able to receive free and reduced meal programs at school. We are a mobile delivery solution, providing food to children right where they are – at school. Our broad network provides 4-5 pounds of substantive, nutritious food directly to the children – at the end of each school week we put the food into their backpack for them to take home. St. Peder’s volunteers go to Howe Elementary school twice a month to put food bags into children’s lockers.
Twin Cities Marathon Outreach Event
On this first weekend in October, people from all over the world come to Minneapolis & St. Paul for the Twin Cities Marathon. St. Peder’s is located about 2 blocks from the Mississippi River Marathon Route. Each year, St. Peder’s opens our doors to serve marathon spectators with a friendly smile, warm coffee and rest rooms. Last year we served over 100 thankful people!
Hearts and Hammers
For over 25 years, Hearts and Hammers (formerly Twin Cities Metro Paint-a-Thon) has helped keep seniors and people with physical disabilities living independently in their own homes. St. Peder’s has been a part of this ministry for 27 years. On the first weekend in August, an intergenerational team of St. Peder’s volunteers washes, primes and paints a home in our Longfellow neighborhood under the direction of our faithful team leaders.
